What does it mean to design spaces that authentically respond to the complexities of modern life?

By approaching this question from various perspectives and scales, the work of the ARC 602o embraces a holistic approach that places community well-being, creating spaces that foster genuine human connection, sustainability, and adaptability, underscoring the significance of “the local” as a co-creator of architecture.

ARC 602o explores architectural design at various scales of geography, landscape, and built environment, from repurposed existing buildings to new constructions. The last studio of the graduate program celebrates learning accomplishments while promoting agency through a site-specific research and design-thinking process concluding in a holistic and comprehensive architectural proposal. Each student’s proposal includes a building (gross area min 20,000, max. 40,000 sqft.) and public space (min. 10,000, max. 30,000 sqft).

Local as a subject matter. The term “Local” transcends mere geographic boundaries; it encompasses the soul of a place, the essence of its people, culture, and history, and its delicate interplay with the environment. The exploration of “Local” in the 21st century challenges architects to embrace the complexities of globalized contexts while honoring the authenticity and uniqueness of a place, fostering a sense of belonging, sustainability, and cultural sensitivity in architectural practice. The theme compels students to become storytellers through their architectural creations – narratives that transcend bricks and mortar, embodying the spirit and identity of a locale. Researching and developing a design project on “Local Systems” demands a delicate balance between innovation and reverence for tradition, delving into the rich palimpsest of a place’s history and environment while envisioning a future that respects and enhances its identity.

The studio is an invitation to engage, respect, and honor the tapestry of human existence woven intricately into the places we inhabit; to make architecture that echoes the heartbeat of a community, a celebration of diversity, history, and the human spirit.
